Histologically this is a well- defined lesion in the nipple dermis composed
of ducts similar to breast. Some of these ducts have papillary projections
into the lumen. Epithelial hyperplasia may be present. There may be variable
amounts of sclerosis, apocrine metaplasia or squamous metaplasia.
Syringomatous pattern may be noted in some cases .These lesions are
histologically similar to
microcystic adnexal carcinoma.
Papillary adenoma of the
nipple is often histologically misinterpreted as
syringocystadenoma papilliferum ,
hidradenoma papilliferum , or low-grade adenocarcinoma.
