Syn.: Erosive adenomatosis, papillary adenoma, florid papillomatosis.

Adenoma or florid papillomatosis of the nipple is a rare, benign neoplasm of breast lactiferous ducts , clinically frequently misdiagnosed as Paget's disease.

Clinical presentation:    Papillary adenoma of the nipple typically occur in a female patient as an erosion, ulceration, or mass that is sometimes accompanied by serous or bloody discharge from the nipple. The lesion is usually unilateral and less than 1cm in diameter.

Histologically this is a well- defined lesion in the nipple dermis composed of ducts similar to breast. Some of these ducts have papillary projections into the lumen. Epithelial hyperplasia may be present. There may be variable amounts of sclerosis, apocrine metaplasia or squamous metaplasia.
Syringomatous pattern may be noted in some cases .These lesions are histologically similar to
microcystic adnexal carcinoma.

Papillary adenoma of the nipple is often histologically misinterpreted as syringocystadenoma papilliferum , hidradenoma papilliferum , or low-grade adenocarcinoma.
