Histopathological Examination of Ear Biopsy - Inner Ear

Specimens from the inner ear are unusual, and consist mostly of  Vestibular Schwannoma (acoustic neuroma).

Some inflammatory conditions involving the middle ear may spread to involve the inner ear and may therefore be biopsied.

Specimens from the neoplasms of the internal auditory canal:

Histopathology report:

The report should comment on:

- the tumour type and differentiation: 

- neurilemmoma: mitotic activity, Antony A, Antony B zones;

- meningioma: mitotic activity, histological types;

The presence of:

- normal nerve tissue, such as from the VIIIth cranial nerve;

- ganglion cells from the vestibular ganglion.
